Agathon Leonard – Danseuse au cothurne and Danseuse au bras leve
Two gilded bronze dancers by the artist Agathon Leonard (1843-1923), a pseudonym for Leonard Agathon van Weydevelt. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. His best works were studies of dancers, such as “La Cothurne”, the dancer sitting on her sandal.
This statue was designed in 1895 and cast in bronze in 1900.
It is a typical fin-de-siècle style, with gilded bronze.
A later model from 1897, le jeu de l’éscharpe (dancer with scarf) was inspired by the new dancer Lois Fuller, and was exhibited in 1900 at the World Exhibition in Paris.
The designs of these two statues are made in different sizes and also with different materials such as ceramics and bronze combined with ivory.
Both dancers wear the same long dress in the fin-de-siècle style.
The height of the “Danseuse au cothurne” is 29 cm and the height of the second statue is 30.5 cm.
Both statues are signed with A. Leonard and have the bronze caster’s mark Susse Frères Paris.
Both statues rest on a square white onyx base.
